Story Transcript:

Ga: Bhí an ghrian ag taitneamh go hard sa spéir thar Aillte an Mhothair.
En: The sun was shining high in the sky over the Aillte an Mhothair (Cliffs of Moher).

Ga: Bhí rang scoile ag siúl ar na cosáin gharbh, an fharraige gorm ag béicíl thíos fúthu.
En: A school class was walking on the rough paths, the blue sea roaring below them.

Ga: Bhí Maeve ag gáire le cúpla cairde, a guth ard agus muiníneach os ard sa ghaoth.
En: Maeve was laughing with a few friends, her voice loud and confident in the wind.

Ga: Fionn, áfach, bhí ciúin.
En: Fionn, however, was quiet.

Ga: Bhí sé ag mothú neirbhíseach, a shúile ag scanadh an tírdhreacha mar a d'aithin sé a eagla.
En: He was feeling nervous, his eyes scanning the landscape as he recognized his fear.

Ga: Bhí Fionn fiosrach agus eachtrúil, ach bhí eagla air roimh airde.
En: Fionn was curious and adventurous, but he was afraid of heights.

Ga: Níor theastaigh uaidh go bhfeicfeadh a chomhghleacaithe é sin.
En: He did not want his classmates to see that.

Ga: Ní raibh sé ag iarraidh go mbeadh cuma lag air os comhair Maeve.
En: He didn't want to appear weak in front of Maeve.

Ga: Bhí sí chomh muiníneach i gcónaí, agus ba mhaith leis a bheith measúil ina súile.
En: She was always so confident, and he wanted to be respected in her eyes.

Ga: Ach de réir mar a shuigh an grúpa ar bhruach na n-aillte, mhothaigh sé an stiall fuar eagla ag preabadh trína chorp.
En: But as the group sat on the edge of the cliffs, he felt the cold stripe of fear pulsing through his body.

Ga: "Tiocfaidh tú, Fionn?
En: "Will you come, Fionn?"

Ga: " arsa Maeve, ag tabhairt faoi deara a neamhchinnteacht.
En: said Maeve, noticing his uncertainty.

Ga: D’éirigh sí feiceálach go tobann, an spraoi imithe as a seasamh.
En: She suddenly became observant, the playfulness gone from her expression.

Ga: Chonaic sí a imní, mar thig le cara maith.
En: She saw his worry, as a good friend might.

Ga: "Ná bí déanach!
En: "Don't be late!"

Ga: " a mhaígh sí, ag tabhairt lámh thacaíochta dó.
En: she insisted, offering him a supportive hand.

Ga: Bhreathnaigh Fionn ar an imeall, an fharraige borb síos ina shúile.
En: Fionn looked at the edge, the rugged sea beneath his eyes.

Ga: D'éist sé le gaoth fheadánach ag pógadh na haillte, agus bhí a chroí i dteannta.
En: He listened to the whistling wind kissing the cliffs, and his heart was in turmoil.

Ga: D’fhéadfadh sé a bheith mar chuid den ghrúpa, nó d’fhéadfadh sé a eagla a admháil.
En: He could join the group, or he could admit his fear.

Ga: D’éirigh a anál tapa agus d’éist Maeve lena thost.
En: His breathing quickened, and Maeve listened to his silence.

Ga: "Mise leis," a d’admhaigh sé, a ghlór íseal.
En: "It's me too," he admitted, his voice low.

Ga: "Tá eagla orm roimh airde.
En: "I'm afraid of heights."

Ga: "Bhí iontas ar Maeve, ach i gceart, bhí meangadh beag ar a haghaidh freisin.
En: Maeve was surprised, but rightly so, there was a small smile on her face too.

Ga: "Cé go maith," a dúirt sí, "ní bhaineann sé le bheith cróga nó ráite.
En: "Well then," she said, "it's not about being brave or outspoken.

Ga: Baineann sé leis an méid atá tú sásta a roinnt linn.
En: It’s about how much you're willing to share with us."

Ga: "Le sin, ghlac
