Today, Thursday, June 25 on Urban Forum Northwest: *Seattle Police Chief Dr. Shon Barnes assumed his position on February 1, 2024. He is nationally recognized leader in crime reduction and community police relations. He came to Seattle after serving as Chief of Police in Madison Wisconsin 2021-2024. Chief Barnes was honored by the National Institute of Justice, was inducted into the Evidence Based Policing Hall of Fame at George Mason University. He received the Excellence in Policing Award from Radford University. *Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown is the 19th Attorney General for the state and the first African American AG. He grew up in Steilacoom, WA and his parents were military veterans which led him to join the ROTC at Morehouse College. He graduated from Harvard Law School and began his legal career as a member of the Army JAG corps. He served as Governor Jay Inslee's Attorney. President Joe Biden nominated Nick to be the US Attorney for Western Washington. *Reverend Dr. Leslie D. Braxton, Pastor, New Beginnings Christian Fellowship, Kent WA comments on the July 5, 1852 Frederick Douglass Fourth of July Speech where Douglas elaborates on how the English Government imposed restraints, burdens and limitations on the colonial children. In his speech he presents a graphic illustration of the conditions of the slaves being chained and brutalized. He points out to his audience that slavery is not in the Constitution. *DeAunte Damper has served as the NAACP State Area Conference LGBTQ Chair. He is the Community Engagement Specialist for King County's Office of Gun Violence Prevention. He will be the Grand Marshall of Seattle's Pride Parade on Sunday, June 28 the event will begin at Westlake Mall at 10:00 am with a rally and the March will depart at 11:00 am and proceed to Seattle Center.
