[המשך] יהודי אינו יכול לשנות אופני השמירה שלו! כמו הדג בטבעו אינו יכול לחיות מחוץ למים, כך חיים יהודים, שהם "המעט מכל העמים", תלויים עפ"י טבע בזה שמגבירים את האיכות על הכמות ואינם יכולים לחיות ללא תומ"צ ש"היא חיינו ואורך ימינו"! [הדיוק ב"אורך ימינו" הוא שכל יום כשלעצמו הוא "ארוך": כשהכ"ד שעות עוברים רק באכילה ושתי' וכיו"ב ללא תוכן אמיתי – אין זה "יום" של אדם כלל. כשמתנהג עפ"י התורה במשך היום – זה "יום" סתם. וכשלומד תורה בשעה אחת בחיות והתלהבות כזו שלאחר זה לוקח כ"ד שעות – זה יום "ארוך"]. מי שטוען שאנו חיים עפ"י דמוקרטי' ואסור להכריח וכו' – הרי זה בדוגמת העושה חור בספינה בלב ים סוער בחדרו בטענה שזהו "דמוקרטי'"... לא רק שאסור לך להתנהג כך אלא עליך "לכוף כל ישראל" בדרכי נועם ובדרכי שלום להשאיר את ה"ספינה" בשלימות ויגיע בשלום למחוז חפצו. וכמ"ש "אם בחוקותי תלכו . . ונתתי שלום בארץ וגו'", עד לקיום היעוד "ואולך אתכם קוממיות" לקבל פני משיח צדקנו.

Just as a fish cannot live outside water, so too the Jewish people, by its very nature, cannot survive without prioritizing quantity over quality and without keeping Torah and mitzvos, which are “our life and the length of our days.” (As the Alter Rebbe explains, “length of our days means an individual day itself becomes “long”: A day spent only on physical activities such as eating and drinking is not a considered a “day” for a human being at all. When one conducts himself according to Torah throughout the day, that is an ordinary day. And when one learns Torah for one hour with such vitality and enthusiasm that would take someone else twenty-four hours to achieve the same thing – that is a “long day.”) And if one argues: we live in a democracy where coercion is forbidden etc. –the answer is that we are all like people on one ship. One cannot say that since he paid for his cabin he is free to drill a hole in it cabin because he paid for his ticket so he can do whatever he wants. Not only must he not drill a hole in the ship; rather, he must also “compel all the Jewish people,” in pleasant ways and peaceful ways, to keep the ship intact by keeping Torah and mitzvos, as the verse states, “If you walk in My statutes…I will grant peace in the land, etc.,” and “I will lead you upright” to greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu.
