Description
Some passages in Scripture are descriptive, meaning they record historical events and actions without intending to establish doctrine or serve as commands for all believers. While these accounts provide valuable lessons and reveal God's work throughout history, doctrine should be built primarily from passages that clearly teach and prescribe God's will. Careful interpretation requires considering the context, timing, and overall message of Scripture so that believers do not mistakenly turn historical narratives into universal commands. Understanding this distinction helps us apply God's Word faithfully and accurately.
