The Woman Who Watched the Sounder at Gannet Rock
Description
November 2023. A crack in a salt-crusted window on Gannet Rock, a half-mile off the coast of Witherby, Maine. A retired harbor master’s widow, Elara Hoyle, stays on the island through November to close the lighthouse for the season. She notices the bell buoy off the south ledge has begun ringing on calm days — no wind, no current. She radios the station. They say the buoy is fine. She rows out anyway. The chain is intact. The clapper is rusted still. The sound comes from underneath. Luna tells the story of the sounder at Gannet Rock — a story about listening too long to something that was never meant to be heard, and the quiet toll it takes on a person who cannot stop.
