When exactly the decline began is something for historians to debate, but we can argue that the empire reached its peak in the 2nd century AD, during the reigns of the Five Good Emperors, and slowly went downhill afterward. Then, that slow decline fell off a cliff 50 years later when the end of the Severan Dynasty brought about a long period of great instability and weakness known as the Crisis of the Third Century.
