'मम राज्ये योग्याः विद्वांसः कति सन्ति इति द्रष्टव्यम्' इति महाराजस्य विक्रमसेनस्य मनसि उत्पन्नं विचारं सः मन्त्रिणम् अवदत् । तदनन्तरदिने एव तौ विदुषाम् अन्वेषणाय गतवन्तौ । ताभ्यां त्रयः विद्वांसः चिताः । राज्ञा द्रष्टुम् इष्टा योग्यता द्वयोः विदुषयोः न आसीत् । तृतीयः विद्वान् नदीतीरे लघुकुटीरे वसति स्म । सः आदरेण राजानं स्वागतीकृतवान् । किन्तु स्वागतप्रतिक्रियायां वैभवं किमपि न आसीत् । कुशलप्रश्नाद्यनन्तरं तयोर्मध्ये प्रचलितेन सम्भाषणेन 'एषः एव सुयोग्यः विद्वान्' इति वदन् राजा तमेव आप्तमार्गदर्शकम् अकरोत् ।

King Vikramasena once thought, “I must see how many worthy scholars are in my kingdom.” He shared this idea with his minister, and the next day they set out in search. They identified three scholars. The first two were not suitable to be presented before the king. The third scholar lived in a small hut by the river. He welcomed the king respectfully, though without any display of wealth or grandeur. After exchanging greetings, the king conversed with him and realized his true wisdom. Declaring, “This is the truly worthy scholar,” the king appointed him as his trusted guide.
