Zara Yaqob: Ethiopia's Philosopher King Who Reformed the Church
Description
Before the Jesuit crisis of Susenyos or the wars of Gragn Ahmed, Emperor Zara Yaqob (r. 1434–1468) transformed Ethiopia from within. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore how this scholar-emperor centralized the Orthodox Church, suppressed pagan survivals, and wrote his own theological masterpiece, the Mashafa Berhan or Book of Light. They discuss his creation of a statewide network of clergy, his harsh campaigns against idolatry and Jewish practices in the highlands, and the establishment of the perpetual prayer cycle that still echoes in Ethiopian monasteries. Along the way, they touch on the cult of the True Cross, the violent suppression of the Stephanite monastic movement, and the political role of Empress Eleni. This is a portrait of a ruler who believed that faith and empire were one — and who was willing to burn heretics to prove it.
