It was in operation for just 18 months, and in that time it became a legend of the American West. The romantic image of a lone rider, facing and triumphing over the dangers posed by vast distances, inclement weather, hostile Indians, and roving bandits is part of Western mythology. In truth, it was a massive undertaking, a business that ultimately failed when it proved massively unprofitable.
