The H5N1 strain of avian flu has been detected in Australia for the first time, with an initial positive test confirmed in a dead migratory bird in southwestern Western Australia. The Agriculture Minister is being briefed as samples undergo confirmatory testing at CSIRO, with results expected within 24 hours. Australia had been the only continent not to detect this strain, which poses significant risks to wildlife, poultry and dairy industries.
