Fuel excise cut extension under consideration
Published 1 week, 4 days ago
Description
The federal government is considering extending the fuel excise cut beyond its end-of-month expiry date, with Cabinet expected to make a decision by early next week. The current three-month measure, introduced in April, halved the fuel excise and scrapped the heavy vehicle road user charge, saving motorists around 26 cents per litre at a cost of $2.5 billion to the budget. The Prime Minister acknowledges that despite a Middle East peace deal, conditions remain far from normal.
