The Night the Crows Watched from the Power Lines on Old Jericho Road
Description
In the autumn of 2007, on a stretch of Old Jericho Road just outside of Tularosa, New Mexico, Luna stopped at a roadside fruit stand that wasn't on any map. The woman running it—gray-eyed, barefoot, wearing a faded denim dress—spoke only in questions. She sold apricots that left a metallic taste, and she asked Luna to stay until the crows landed. The crows came at sunset. Hundreds of them. They lined the power lines on both sides of the road, and they watched. Not the woman. Luna. The woman said something then that Luna still cannot shake loose from her chest: 'They remember you from before.' What follows is a quiet, sun-burnt story about a debt older than memory, and a road that keeps calling you back. No monsters. No violence. Just a woman, a stand of fruit, and the weight of being recognized by something that should not know your name.
