When the World Health Organization invokes its highest emergency designation, the world is meant to take notice. On May 17, 2026, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern — the most serious alert the organisation can issue. The announcement came just two days after the DRC Ministry of Health confirmed the country's seventeenth Ebola outbreak, centred in Ituri Province in the volatile northeast. As of late May, authorities had recorded 125 confirmed cases and over 900 suspected cases, with deaths among suspected patients exceeding 220.
