Oakland, San Francisco, Portland, Baltimore, Memphis, and D.C., to name a few, were once booming metropolitan areas known for being “great American cities.” Now, these same cities are caught in what Kennedy describes as a “death loop” where bad politics take precedence over prosperity. 

Kennedy discusses the factors she thinks are contributing to the downfall of these cities, such as a rise in crime, misdirected criminal justice reforms, and the refusal to decriminalize and regulate street drugs.
