Australian teenagers as young as 11 are being recruited online by foreign states including Iran and Russia to carry out terrorist activities on Australian soil. Counter-terrorism agencies have issued warnings about this 'gig economy terrorism', where hostile states pay young people to conduct surveillance, target acquisition, or carry out attacks. At least one Australian teenager is currently under investigation for an alleged terror plot linked to an overseas country.
