AI technology deployed to save endangered cockatoos
Published 2 weeks ago
Description
Carnaby's black cockatoos, native to Western Australia for thousands of years, are facing extinction with their population halving over the past 45 years due to land clearing and loss of habitat. Amazon has provided a $3.3 million grant to fund conservation efforts, including planting 200,000 banksia trees along a 10-kilometre stretch south of Mandurah and implementing world-first AI facial recognition technology to track the birds. The species plays a crucial role in the ecosystem as one of the only birds capable of eating banksia tree fruit, with their beaks exerting nine tonnes of pressure.
