Yonatan Urich indicted over Bild leak

The time is now 7:01 AM in New York, I'm Noa Levi and this is the latest Israel Today: Ongoing War Report.

In US Military Role, three Indian sailors have died in a US military operation to halt a tanker off Oman as part of Washington’s blockade of Iran-linked shipping, a campaign that began on April 13. Indian authorities said the deaths are the first reported since the blockade began, and that the operations have seen the United States disable eight ships and turn back more than 100 others. Separately, the Indian embassy in Oman reported an incident involving another tanker off Oman, with the commercial vessel MT Jalveer, carrying 20 Indians on board, attacked by the US navy; all the sailors on that ship were confirmed to be safe. Of the three vessels involved, two were sanctioned by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control, while the third was in the non-compliant category. Indian Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed the three sailors had died, saying, "Sadly, three Indian seafarers initially reported missing are now confirmed dead after bodies have been located and identified." The Shipping Ministry also noted there are 562 Indian seafarers on Indian-flagged vessels.

In Regional Impacts, the Israel Defense Forces are set to use the classified operational video system known as Z-Tube to broadcast World Cup matches to soldiers stationed in Lebanon for the first time. Operated by the IDF C4I and Cyber Defense Directorate, the system was developed for operational needs and enables real-time video streaming to all branches with a delay of only fractions of a second. The IDF describes it as an "operational YouTube," providing access to thousands of video sources for live broadcasts, debriefings, and operational learning, and it can store large volumes of data—nearly the equivalent of 100,000 mobile phones daily. Launched in 2017 and later expanded to all branches, Z-Tube played a core role in command-and-control during the Swords of Iron war. Separately, an open-source intelligence post on X claimed Jordan was seriously hit this morning, with uncertainty over whether US assets were impacted, and noting that Iranian ballistic missiles appear to largely avoid interceptions.

In Israeli Domestic Politics, Yonatan Urich, a senior aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was indicted by the State Attorney’s Office on the charge of transmitting classified information with the intent to harm state security in connection with leaking documents to the Bild newspaper in 2024. Prosecutors asked the Tel Aviv District Court to bar Urich from the Prime Minister’s Office and from access to security facilities and classified materials, and to prohibit contact with those involved until the end of proceedings. The charges are added to the broader Bild case indictment, which also includes charges against former Prime Minister’s Office spokesman Eli Feldstein and IDF reservist Ari Rosenfeld. A spokesperson for the Likud party posted content on social media in relation to the case.

In Uplifting News, Israel’s Tourism Ministry unveiled a new North American campaign titled “I Am Israel,” designed to present the country as a lived experience rather than just a collection of sites. Backed by about 20 million NIS, the campaign aims to revive inbound tourism during a period of regional instability and reputational challenges abroad, with officials describing the campaign as a move to showcase culture, people, and everyday life. Cara Trager, a Queens-based journalist and beloved Jewish communal leader, died at 71 after injuries from a car collision that occurred four days earlier while she and her husband were returning from an Israeli restaurant. Trager, who wrote for Newsday and was deeply involved in Jewish institutions and causes, was described by her
