The Typewriter That Typed My Birth
Description
Luna stands frozen in the playwright's apartment, the typewriter's keys still warm from typing her mother's name. The glowing key on the carriage gleams like a promise or a threat. She remembers a drawer in her childhood home, locked, that she never dared open. Now she knows why. The doppelganger's voice drifts through the walls, counting down. Luna unscrews the key from the machine and drives it into her palm, hoping blood will break a blood curse. The floor opens beneath her, and she falls into a dark nursery where a music box plays Clara's lullaby. In the crib, a doll with her face holds a piece of paper that reads 'Finish what she started.' The doppelganger appears in the rocking chair, rocking. Luna asks who she is. The doppelganger smiles with Lydia's mouth and says, 'I am the daughter you were meant to be.' The hour before dawn is silent.
