Trailing 4-0 after a brutal second period that saw Mitch Marner score a natural hat trick, Rod Brind'Amour inserted Brandon Bussi into the crease to start the third. Bussi instantly altered the game by stopping a Marner penalty shot, setting the stage for an absolute miracle. The Canes blitzed Vegas for 3 goals in 39 seconds—officially the fastest three goals scored by one team in a Stanley Cup Final—via Jordan Martinook, Taylor Hall, and Jordan Staal. Carolina eventually tied it 4-4 to force overtime.
