Description
One night in October 2022, I met a woman on the deck of a trawler in Port Clyde, Maine. She was not a fisherman, not a tourist, not anyone with a reason to be there. She told me about the light she saw from the breakwater — a light that had drowned three times and kept coming back. She described the shape under it, the sound it made against the hull, and the promise it had whispered to her through the fog. I thought she was telling me a ghost story. But when I looked down at the coil of rope at her feet, I saw it was wet, and there was kelp braided into the strands — the same kind that grows only in water too deep for the sun to reach.
