When We’ve Been Struggling for a Long Time
When we’ve been struggling for a long time, it can be easy to lose hope.
We begin to wonder if anything will ever change. We grow tired of trying. And sometimes we start to see ourselves as others do.
Matthew tells us,
“Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak.” (Matthew 9:20)
Twelve years.
Twelve years of disappointment. Twelve years of setbacks. Twelve years of struggle.
Matthew records Jesus saying that her faith had made her well.
What was it about her faith?
She never gave up hope.
After all those years, she still believed that healing was possible.
She refused to let other people’s judgment become her identity.
A woman with her condition was considered unclean and wasn’t supposed to be in public. But she did not define herself by what others thought of her.
And she did what she could with what she had.
She could not stand in front of the crowd. She could not command attention. She could only reach out and touch the hem of his cloak.
So that’s what she did.
Her story shows faith as persistence.
The willingness to keep hoping. The courage to keep showing up. The decision to do what we can with what we have.
