What Are We Leaving Behind?
Sometimes we spend so much time thinking about where we’re going and what’s ahead of us that we forget to consider what we’re leaving behind.
Even as Abram continued a journey of uncertain length toward an unknown destination, he repeatedly paused to leave something behind.
More than once, Genesis tells us:
“He built there an altar to the Lord.” (Genesis 12:7)
An altar was a place of sacrifice—a place where gifts could be brought and offered.
Abram’s tents traveled with him.
But the altars remained.
As we move through life, we’re invited to do more than simply continue our own journey.
We’re invited to create places and spaces where others can contribute, participate, and offer their own gifts.
The question is not only where we are going.
The question is also:
What are we leaving behind?
