Description
Luna recalls a winter night on Grays Harbor, Washington, where a lone fisherman named Elias Corwin pulled a body from the water—except the body wasn't dead. The man sat up, spoke in a voice that tasted like rust and low tide, and asked for the 'key to the deep lock.' Elias brought him home. For three days the man sat in a wooden chair, never blinking, never eating, dripping brine onto the floorboards. He told Elias things about the ocean floor no living person should know. By the fourth morning, the chair was empty, but the floorboards were warped beyond repair, and Elias's left hand had turned the color of a dead jellyfish. Luna remembers all this because she grew up two houses down from Elias. She saw the hand. She heard the tape recording. And she still dreams about what the man whispered into Elias's ear just before dawn.
