Luke Thomas: Donald Trump's DOJ is targeting E. Jean Carroll, after it emerged that the DOJ was examining the outside funding behind Carroll’s successful civil lawsuits against Trump.
Carroll won two major judgments against Trump: a jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation in 2023, awarding her $5 million, before a second jury awarded her $83.3 million for further defamation in 2024. Now, with the DOJ reportedly investigating a Reid Hoffman-backed nonprofit that helped fund part of Carroll’s legal case, critics are asking whether the Trump administration is using federal power to revisit a deeply personal legal defeat.
