במס' ברכות: "בשאלה שאני" (שהשואל שואל כעני על פתח שאינו מרים ראש לשאול שאלה גדולה), ופריך, "בשאלה נמי הכתיב [בשיעור תהלים דיום ט"ז בחודש] הרחב פיך ואמלאהו", ומשני, "ההוא בדברי תורה הכתוב כתיב", משא"כ בשאלת צרכיו. וצ"ל: 1) הרי אם אדם מרגיש ש"מרובים צרכי עמך", מ"ע מן התורה שיתפלל ויבקש מה' שימלא לו את כל צרכיו?! 2) בירושלמי מס' תענית איתא "רשב"ל אמר אם סדרתה תפילה לא תהא מיצר פיך אלא הרחב פיך (לשאול כל צרכיך...) ואמלאהו"?! והביאור: אף שכאשר מרגיש ש"מרובים צרכי עמך" חל עליו חיוב לבקש זאת מה', אבל אין "ציווי" שיהי' האדם במצב ד"דעתם קצרה" ובמילא ידמה ש"מרובים צרכי עמך", ולכן אא"פ לפרש מ"ש "הרחב פיך" שקאי על דברים גשמיים, כי כיצד אפשר לצוות למי ששמח בחלקו "הרחב פיך"?! וע"ז מוסיף ר"ל: "אם סדרתה תפילה", כאשר עבודתו היא בדרגא נעלית ביותר עד שעושה גם מדבריו הגשמיים כלים לאלקות, אזי "הרחב פיך" גם בנוגע לדברים גשמיים ואסור לו לוותר עליהם.

The Gemara says in Brachos that the verse (in today’s Tehillim) “Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it” applies only to words of Torah, whereas for one’s personal needs, one should ask for little. But seemingly, it is a positive mitzvah of the Torah to ask Hashem for all of one’s needs, even when one feels that “the needs of Your people are many”? Also, the Yerushalmi says in Taanis: Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said: If you have set forth your tefillah, you should not constrain your mouth; rather, “Open your mouth wide (to ask for all your needs) and I will fill it”? The explanation is as follows: It is true that when one feels that “the needs of Your people are many,” he is obligated to ask Hashem for all his needs, even though the reason he feels his needs are many is because he is “of limited understanding.” But there is no obligation to be “of limited understanding.” Therefore, you cannot say that the verse “Open your mouth wide” refers to material matters, because if someone is not of limited understanding, and therefore is happy with his lot, how can he be commanded to “Open your mouth wide” and ask excessively? To this, Reish Lakish adds: “If you have ordered your tefillah,” meaning, when one’s service is on such a high level that he turns his physical affairs into channels for G-dliness, then one must “Open your mouth wide” regarding material matters as well, and he is not permitted to forgo them.
