You wake up in the middle of the jungle... Outside your cabin... the air feels heavy. Humid. The insects never stop making noise here. You step outside barefoot into the mud, and all around you... people are quietly moving toward the pavilion at the center of Jonestown. Children are half asleep in their parents’ arms. Old people dragging themselves forward through the dark. And overhead... through crackling loudspeakers hidden across the settlement... you hear the voice of Jim Jones. He tells everyone the outside world is coming for them. He says American soldiers will parachute into the jungle. He says they’ll torture the children. He says there’s no future left now. Only ONE FINAL ACT of dignity.
