The Economic and Political episode: Latoya Benjamin talks black economics & running for office

Episode 22 Published 11 hours ago
Description
Latoya Benjamin joins us on the couch to talk about all things politics and black economics. We start with economics and how certain practices affect our community on a whole as black people. Latoya talks about what got her so intrigued with understanding urban policy and economics. We discuss the state of the black economy before and after the pandemic. We talk about the idea of all Black wealth leaving the community and what we can do to change that. We talk about what it takes to build a grassroots campaign to run for office in your community. More specifically, how Latoya Benjamin ran for office and came in fourth place with no major funding outside of her community. Furthermore, talk about her journey in Africa and being stranded out there for 4 months after only thinking it was supposed to be a two-week trip. We talk about what happens when black people bank with major institutions and the racism that corresponds with it.
