Government sues 3M for $2 billion over toxic forever chemicals

Published 3 weeks, 2 days ago
Description
The Australian government has launched a $2 billion lawsuit against manufacturing giant 3M, alleging the company withheld and misrepresented information about toxic PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam used at 28 Defence Force bases across Australia. These 'forever chemicals' have contaminated surrounding communities' groundwater and drinking water, with 98-100% of Australians now having PFAS in their blood. The chemicals, known since the 1980s to be toxic and persistent in the environment, are linked to cancer, immunological effects and cardiovascular disease.
