The Padres desperately needed a win Friday night in Washington and Jackson Merrill delivered the biggest swing of the night.
After falling behind 4-1 early and watching Lucas Giolito struggle through another rough outing, San Diego battled back behind RBI hits from Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr., a game-tying homer from Ty France, and then the defining moment of the night — Jackson Merrill’s two-run blast in the seventh inning.
Merrill’s 414-foot shot came immediately after a costly Nationals error by second baseman Nasim Nunez and proved to be the difference in a 7-5 Padres victory.
The homer was Merrill’s first since May 4 in San Francisco, snapping a 74-at-bat home run drought and giving him five home runs on the season.
Fernando Tatis Jr. continued his recent hot streak with three hits and an RBI, while France finished with two hits, two runs scored and a game-tying sixth-inning homer.
The bullpen was outstanding after Giolito allowed four runs in 2.2 innings. Yuki Matsui, Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Mason Miller combined to preserve the lead.
Miller recorded his MLB-leading fourth four-out save of the season, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the eighth before striking out two in the ninth to secure the victory.
The Padres snap a four-game losing streak and open the road trip with a much-needed win over the Nationals.
