Learning from Legends, Leading with Legacy: Kermit Blount
Description
On this episode of WSSU Ram Nation, Steven J. Gaither sits down with one of the true legends of Winston-Salem State and CIAA football — Kermit Blount. A two-time CIAA champion quarterback (1977, 1978) and a two-time CIAA champion head coach (1999, 2000), Blount’s journey is woven into the very fabric of WSSU football history. From his Richmond, Virginia roots to leading the Rams’ rise under coach Bill Hayes, Blount shares stories of overcoming doubt, making history against rivals like Virginia Union, North Carolina Central, and A&T, and helping turn Bowman Gray Stadium into a football hotbed. He also opens up about his transition into coaching, the lessons he learned from icons like Bill Hayes and Willie Jeffries, and the pride of returning to lead his alma mater on the sidelines. This conversation is more than football—it’s about legacy, leadership, and the drive that made Blount one of the most important figures in WSSU athletics.
