Ep 252 - Healing through Woodland Photography with Simon Baxter

Season 5 Episode 252 Published 1 week ago
Description

Simon Baxter's path to photography wasn't straightforward. A back injury in 2012 ended his adrenaline fuelled outdoor life, mountain biking, kayaking, snowboarding, and forced him to find a slower way back to the natural world. A labradoodle puppy called Meg did exactly that.

Their woodland walks around the North York Moors gave Simon something unexpected. The solitude, the complexity of trees and the therapeutic benefits of time spent among them became the foundation of an entire career. He's now recognised as one of the world's leading woodland photographers.

In this episode Simon talks about moving from craftsman to artist, using composition to speak for the trees rather than simply document them. He discusses shooting locally to learn a woodland's rhythms, the mycorrhizal wood wide web as creative inspiration, and building a sustainable business through YouTube, workshops, books and prints alongside his involvement in the 6-1-7 Club with Thomas Heaton.

I hope you enjoy the show!
