Not just oppression for Afghan women - It’s gender apartheid.
Published 1 week, 6 days ago
Description
Women and girls in Afghanistan are facing severe brutal restrictions put in place by the Taliban. And they are crying out, asking, why is the world watching, so silently and so cruelly? When the US withdrew and the Taliban retook the country in 2021, women and girls were re-targeted. In 2024 Meryl Streep testified at the United Nations saying women and girls in Afghanistan have less freedom than cats.
But for decades, the Feminist Majority Foundation has been working diligently on a campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan. Makhfi Azizi is the director of the program. She recently spoke with Her Turn reporter Arlene Zaucha about it and begins the story by explaining how she came to this work. For more information you can check out Stop Gender Apartheid.
