New Marine Conservation Area in BC
Description
Realm of the Salmon - A massive marine conservation area, larger than Prince Edward Island, is being established on British Columbias central coast. Called Mia-yaltwa Ha’lidzogm hoon, its a partnership between six First Nations and governments, covering six thousand seven hundred square kilometers. The area, part of the Great Bear Sea, is rich in marine life, including salmon, killer whales, and humpback whales. While most fishing continues, bottom trawling is banned. The area is also an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area, giving Indigenous partners a significant say in management. The initiative aligns with Canadas plan to protect thirty percent of its ocean and coastal waters by 2030, promoting marine ecosystem health and supporting coastal communities.
