October 29th, 2022. Seoul, South Korea. The weather was perfect. That’s what makes this story feel so haunting. Nothing looked dangerous. Nothing felt dangerous. People were excited. Laughing. Taking photos. Adjusting costumes in mirrors before heading out into the streets of Itaewon for Halloween weekend. And then, within minutes, hundreds of people couldn’t breathe. Not because of a fire. Not because of a terrorist attack. Not because of poisoned drinks or some internet conspiracy. People died because there were simply too many human beings packed into a space that couldn’t hold them. And what terrifies me most about this case… is how normal it looked right before everything collapsed.
