Appointed governor general in 2001, his tenure ended after two years due to a 2003 inquiry into his handling of child sexual abuse allegations within the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane. Despite acknowledging mistakes, he maintained he committed no crimes. In 2023, he ceased practicing as an Anglican priest to reduce distress for survivors. Hollingworth was Australian of the Year in 1991 for his extensive work.
