Description
Supernatural Season 9, Episode 7, Bad Boys recap đźšś Dean Winchester had a whole secret life, and Sam had no idea, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
A call from the past drags the boys to Hurleyville, New York, where a ghost is terrorizing a home for troubled kids. It sounds routine, except Dean spent two months at this exact farm as a teenager. He joined the wrestling team, got his first kiss, and was going to go to the school dance. Then he vanished without a trace. The story John told Sam about it? A complete lie.
Episode Highlights:
- A barn game of hide-and-seek, and a tractor that comes to life on its own
- Dean grabs a call from Sonny, and Sam learns about “D-Dog”
- Dean checks that “everyone” is okay with a trip to the Catskills (wink, Ezekiel)
- Ruth makes the boys take off their “roach stompers,” so they go ghost hunting in socks
- Sonny (Blake Gibbons), a handlebar mustache, and a gravelly voice that gets the hosts’ attention
- Ruth has the tea: corn liquor, a jealous husband, and a meat cleaver
- Little Timmy’s fingertip handshake, and Dean’s lesson on doing it right
- Robin the waitress doesn’t recognize Dean (or does she?)
- A shower curtain scene straight out of Psycho
- A lawnmower, a missing rosary, and blood splooge #78
Berly calls this one damn near perfect. Her only nitpicks are that teen Dean’s story feels younger than 16, and that was a lot to pack into two months. LA counters that Dean never had a normal school life to measure against. LA loved seeing Dean finally get to just be a kid for a little while, and dad Dean is back. The ghost makeup is the MVP: one bright-kitchen jump scare made both hosts scream. Then the last flashback answers why Dean ever left, and LA called it before it aired.
In the lore segment, LA asks: can a person be literally haunted? Researchers have a name for it: haunted people syndrome, recurring supernatural experiences tied to stress, trauma, and heightened sensitivity. A Baylor College of Medicine researcher suggests a “sensed presence” can be the brain’s response to situations we’re not ready to process. A CrimeReads essay argues that PTSD works like a haunting, ghosts that follow you everywhere. And poltergeist activity often centers on one specific person, not a place. Timmy and Dean turn out to be textbook cases of both kinds, and it reframes everything you just watched.
“You look pretty rocking to me, Dean Winchester.” – Robin
