The Woman Who Stayed at the Pines Motel
Description
December 1987. A woman checks into Room 9 of the Pines Motel on Route 17 outside Varick, New York, and does not check out. Not because she died—but because she never left. Luna tells the story of how the motel's night clerk, her uncle, tried to forget the guest who only ever appeared in the reflection of the ice machine's glass, in the static of the office television, in the smell of damp wool and old roses. A story about a room that still rents itself, about a woman who never finished the conversation she started. No one has stayed in Room 9 since 1988, but sometimes the light is on. Sometimes the television flickers behind the drawn curtains. Sometimes, if you stand at the office window after midnight, you can see her silhouette watching you back.
