As the Supreme Court weighs whether to take up three cases that could dramatically limit the ability of groups like the ACLU and private citizens to enforce the Voting Rights Act, critics warn the country is entering a new “John Crowe” era, a reference to Chief Justice John Roberts and the Court’s rollback of voting rights protections. At the same time, a new generation of civil rights leaders is emerging, including Tennessee State Representative Justin J. Pearson, whose voice and activism are galvanizing a new movement.
