May 18 | Your Pain Doesn’t Have to Define You
Description
Today’s reading from 1 Chronicles 4–6 and John 6:1–21 reminds us that painful beginnings, difficult labels, and broken seasons do not have to become the final definition of a person’s life. Both passages reveal a God who sees beyond human limitations and continues to work with compassion, purpose, and power in the lives of ordinary people.
In 1 Chronicles 4, the brief account of Jabez interrupts a long genealogy with a deeply personal story connected to pain, identity, and redemption. His name carried the memory of sorrow and hardship, yet his life became known for honor, dependence on God, and a desire for God’s presence to reshape his future. The passage reminds us that God is able to bring healing, purpose, and transformation even out of painful stories and wounded beginnings.
In John 6, Jesus feeds the five thousand and later walks across the stormy sea toward His frightened disciples. The chapter reveals Christ not only as provider, but as the One who steps into fear, uncertainty, and human need with both compassion and divine authority. Even when people misunderstand Him or focus only on immediate circumstances, Jesus continues to reveal deeper spiritual realities about who He is.
Together, these passages encourage us to stop allowing pain, failure, fear, or past wounds to become the ultimate identity shaping our future. They remind us that God’s presence, grace, and power are able to lead people beyond the limitations of their past into lives marked by faith, healing, and deeper dependence on Him.
