When People Fear the End of the World
Some people fear
the world is about to end.
And some others hope for it.
But the words of the prophet Joel,
which are quoted in Acts,
are less about destruction
and more about a new beginning.
“‘In the last days it will be,’ God declares,
‘that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh…’”
— from Acts 2:17
These are not words of despair.
They are words of hope.
Words pointing toward a time
when barriers begin to fall,
when people once divided
become connected to God
and to each other.
A time when fear,
greed,
violence,
and exploitation
no longer govern the way we live together.
The last days
are not about the end of the world itself,
but about the end
of the world as it is.
And our participation
in the world
as it should be.
