Lotus Pivots to Hybrid Future, Ships EVs to Canada
Description
Lotus, the British sports car brand owned by Chinese automaker Geely, has unveiled a new strategy for its electric vehicle (EV) lineup. Instead of focusing solely on pure electric vehicles, Lotus will now offer a mix of hybrids and EVs. This shift comes after years of producing high-end EVs like the Eletre SUV and Evija hypercar, but weak demand for these pricey models forced the company to reconsider its approach.
The new strategy involves keeping all current models, adding hybrid powertrains, and aiming for a 60/40 split favoring plug-in hybrids over pure battery electrics. Lotus CFO Daxue Wang believes this approach will provide better range and performance, as demonstrated by the success of their new X-Hybrid Eletre X, which has already received over one thousand preorders in China.
In addition to the new hybrid models, Lotus has also teased the Type one thirty-five, a hybrid V8 supercar with over one thousand horsepower set for a 2028 debut, and an updated, lighter, more powerful Emira gas sports car. The company is also merging its UK and China operations to cut costs and achieve thirty thousand annual sales for profitability.
Lotus has chosen Canada as its North American beachhead and is positioning itself for strong growth there. The company may also consider expanding to the US if trade winds shift. This mixed-power play allows Lotus to remain versatile in a rapidly changing auto market.
