Ireland's Car Registrations Surge, EVs Lead the Way
Description
New car registrations in Ireland surged by 17% in April 2023, reaching 10,184 units, up from 8,707 in the same period last year. Year-to-date, registrations stand at 75,074, a 2.1% increase over the same period in 2022. However, commercial vehicles told a different story, with light commercials dipping 3% in April but up 14.2% year-to-date. Heavy goods vehicles, on the other hand, fell 20.5% in April and 9.5% year-to-date.
Imported used cars saw a significant increase of 43.1% in April, with year-to-date imports up 40.1%. Electric vehicles (EVs) stole the show, with 2,779 registered in April, more than double the 1,335 from the same period last year. Year-to-date, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached 16,779, a 48.5% increase. Hybrids held the market share at 26.67%, followed by EVs at 22.35%, petrol at 21.25%, plug-in hybrids at 14.41%, and diesel trailing at 12.96%.
SIMIs Brian Cooke noted that private buyers drove 77% of EV sales, thanks to government incentives, but emphasized that the 22% market share falls short of climate goals. He urged maintaining supports, boosting infrastructure, and accelerating EV adoption before 2030, despite commercials lagging in the green shift.
