The 5th commandment is the only one of the Ten Commandments that comes with an explicit promise attached — and John Kitevski unpacks why. Continuing Gateway Church's series on the Ten Commandments, he shows that "honor your father and mother" isn't a soft suggestion: the original Hebrew word for honor means "heavy," carrying the sense of treating someone as weighty and highly prized, not second place.

Kitevski calls this the "bridge commandment" — it looks back to loving God (the first four commandments) and forward to loving your neighbour (the last five), connecting the two. He walks through why the Sabbath commandment sits at the literal centre of the Ten Commandments by word count, why honoring parents applies equally to mother and father, and why Scripture never treats this as a childhood-only command — Paul lists dishonoring parents right alongside the sins of the last days. Along the way, he unpacks the example of Jesus honoring Mary even from the cross, and a story about Frederick the Great that shows what quietly honoring a parent can look like.

This is a practical, Bible-based look at family, obedience, and what it means to raise — and be — children who honor their parents "in the Lord."
