Emperor Gelawdewos: Ethiopia's Forgotten Renaissance King
Description
Emperor Gelawdewos (Claudius) ruled Ethiopia from 1540 to 1559, a period of crisis and revival. He ascended the throne as a teenager after his father Lebna Dengel died fleeing the forces of Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi (Ahmed Gurey). Gelawdewos rebuilt the Ethiopian army with Portuguese musketeers, won the decisive Battle of Wayna Daga (1543), where Ahmed Gurey was killed, and then faced a new threat: the Ottoman-backed Adal Sultanate's resurgence. He also navigated the arrival of Jesuit missionaries, leading to theological debates that foreshadowed later conflicts. This episode explores Gelawdewos's military campaigns, his delicate diplomacy with Portugal and the Ottomans, and his controversial religious writings—including his defense of Ethiopian Orthodox practices against Catholic critiques. We also cover his death in battle against the Adalite Emir Nur ibn Mujahid, and his legacy as a warrior-scholar who held Ethiopia together in its darkest hour.
