Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Host Dave Gebroe talks with legendary Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady about the classic psych band’s entire recorded output (for over a dozen hours total), with commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings for every release. Feed Your Head: The Great Jefferson Airplane Deep Dive was consciously crafted to act as the ultimate repository of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth, the almighty Jefferson Airplane. As a celebration of the kick-off to what is going to be one hell of a wild ride, THIS ENTIRE EPISODE WILL BE AVAILABLE FREE OF CHARGE ON DISCOGRAFFITI’S PUBLIC STREAM! (...with the implied agreement that, in return, you’ll subscribe to our Patreon to tune in to the rest of the series!)
Going in to this interview, I was under the impression that this might be the only time I’d ever get with Jack. However, after he experienced the legendary “Discograffiti effect,” Jack generously afforded me carte blanche to talk at great length about each of the Airplane’s records. Part 2 is from my first interview with Jack, in which we cover his life story from the Summer of Love up to the late 1980s Airplane reunion.
Here are just a few of the many things that Jack discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:
- Monterey Pop, Woodstock, & Altamont;
- How he rolled with Paul Kantner’s more revolutionary material;
- The details behind how Jack wound up playing on Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile”;
- How speed skating may have saved his life during the dissolution of Jefferson Airplane;
- The wilderness years, during which Jack did some of his most vital work as bassist for the San Francisco punk band SVT;
- His true feelings on the 1989 Airplane reunion;
- And making After Bathing At Baxter’s, Crown Of Creation, Bless Its Pointed Little Head, Volunteers, Bark, Long John Silver, and Jefferson Airplane.
Dave's Show Notes are available at a separate link for Lieutenants & up.
