Sow and Grow – How the Whole World Depends on Pollen – Margaret Griffin

Published 1 week, 1 day ago
Description

This week’s show opens with a week away in Carrowkeel South, near Aghagower at the foot of Croagh Patrick — beautiful drives, gorse in full fragrance, cuckoos calling in the evening, and rosary before Mass in Westport each morning. An appeal goes out to anyone with knowledge of the famine ridges still visible on the Mayo hillsides. The main gardening topic is pollination: how flowers change their scent signature once their pollen is spent to redirect bees elsewhere, and why the whole system of fruit and vegetable production depends on it. The presenter also flags a concern she noticed on her travels: the invasive Rhododendron ponticum is spreading rapidly across the west, its dense evergreen canopy smothering native wildflowers including violets, bluebells and primroses. Anyone in the area with observations is invited to make contact.
