Body Talk – John Paul II and Divorce – Nick Koeppel

Published 1 week ago
Description

Nick Koeppel begins working through St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body catechesis, delivered as papal Wednesday audiences from 1979 to 1984. He sets out the catechesis’s three working titles — The Redemption of the Body, Human Love in the Divine Plan, and the Sacramentality of Marriage — and explains why John Paul II insists on an “adequate anthropology”: one that takes origin, history (including the fall and redemption) and destiny together, rather than reducing the human person to biology or psychology alone. The episode then follows John Paul II’s opening move, tracing Jesus’s twice-repeated appeal to “the beginning” in the Matthew 19 divorce debate back to Genesis — where God pauses before creating the human person, as if entering into himself before saying “let us make man in our image.” Next week: original solitude, original unity, and original nakedness.
