RM Breakfast Show – Catherine of Siena and the Vocations Crisis – Fr Billy Swan

Published 1 week ago
Description

Fr. Billy Swan presents from Casa Santa Marta — his new address inside the Vatican walls — on the feast of St Catherine of Siena. He opens with Pope Leo XIV’s letter for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, drawing out three themes from the Good Shepherd Sunday gospel: pause, listen, and entrust yourself to the one who calls. The second half turns to Catherine herself, why Fr. Billy loves her, what she did to restore the papacy to Rome, and what her writings reveal about a soul for whom faith was anything but dull. The American theologian Stanley Hauerwas once quipped that Christianity’s problem is simply that it is too dull; Catherine’s answer to that, Fr. Billy suggests, is still burning. The programme closes with a prayer from Catherine’s own writings and a hymn based on Psalm 42.
