Empress Taytu Betul: The Power Behind Ethiopia's Throne

Season 1 Episode 26 Published 1 month, 3 weeks ago
Description

We often think of the Battle of Adwa as Menelik II's triumph, but behind the emperor stood his formidable wife, Taytu Betul. In this episode, we explore Taytu's early life in the northern highlands, her shrewd political marriage to Menelik, and her dominant role at the imperial court. She personally founded Addis Ababa in 1886, choosing the site because of its hot springs and strategic location. During the First Italo-Ethiopian War, Taytu commanded her own garrison at Mek'ele, led a 10,000-strong army, and negotiated with the enemy. Her diplomatic skills were key to maintaining the fragile coalition of Ethiopian nobles against the Italians. After Adwa, she wielded immense power, sidelining rivals and influencing succession, but her later years were marked by conflict with Menelik's modernist ministers. We'll also examine the gendered legacy of her leadership and her enduring symbolism in Ethiopian history. This episode draws on Ethiopian court chronicles, European accounts, and recent scholarship to paint a portrait of a queen who was anything but a mere consort.
