Coming back to Sandcastle was not something she wanted to do any time soon, but her mother had passed and now she was the sole owner of her childhood home sitting above the waves of the Pacific. It was a beautiful house where many happy memories were made until that fateful day that will forever haunt her dreams. Now coming back for a second time in a lifetime she wondered if it might be her last. She pulled into the driveway of the home nestled quietly into the shadows of the rocks above the ocean. Her family abode sat above the left side of the Sandcastle beach at the mouth of the Pacific. The beach at the heart of Sandcastle was a beautiful, sandy beach surrounded by the most tormented cliffs. Thousands of years of salty water eroded the sides of the cliffs where rocks and obsidian protruded into the sunlight. In some spots, the seagrass and icicle plants covered the hillside but in others, it was a constant reminder of how dangerous the coast can be. She knew her friend Brian Lam who loved exploring these cliffs had disappeared hunting for treasure in them and they were a constant reminder of his demise. On the cliff across from her home stood the Miller mansion. The Miller family lived in Sandcastle even longer than her own. Mrs. Miller was undoubtedly too old to run her own place now and she wondered who could possibly be keeping up that beautiful home. It was much more of a castle than her own house even though both homes were the pride of the area. She would have to go visit once her family homestead was put up for sale. She parked the car in front of the white pillars and stepped over the stone pathway. She knocked using the large iron ring hanging on the wooden door then shook her head. Who am I knocking for? she thought to herself then used her own house key to enter the large wooden doors. The entryway was tall, at least twenty feet high, and covered both stories of the house. The stairs heading off to the right of the house led to the bedrooms and upstairs bathrooms. The stairs to the left led to the den and the guest rooms plus a guest bathroom. As she shut the heavy doors behind her, the sound of the wind and the crashing waves faded. Despite the comfort of the roof over her head, the house was cold and uninviting. She half expected to smell either gingerbread or banana bread, two of her favorite recipes that her mother would make when she made an appearance. For a brief moment, she thought she could smell the cinnamon and ginger coming from the kitchen but then the cold air wafted in her nose. No, all that greeted her was loneliness. With both of her parents now dead and her immediate family gone, all she knew was despair.Feeling a little fatigued from the dr
